Banat al-Sabbar (Cactus Girls), is the first novel by the Moroccan writer Karima Ahdad, it  is a witty, sardonic look at the struggles of a family of Moroccan women after the death of the patriarch leaves them homeless and impoverished. A fierce indictment of injustice and inequality. The novel won a regional Mohamed Zafzaf Prize in 2020

and has been published in two editions. 

بأسلوب جريء ومختلف، ترصد رواية بنات الصبّار، الفائزة بجائزة محمد زفزاف للرواية باللغة العربية عام 2020، مصائر نساء عائلة الزياني اللواتي يجدن أنفسهنّ أمام وضعٍ معقّد بعد وفاة الأب وفقدانهنّ مأواهنّ الوحيد. تتبّع بنات الصبار حياتهنّ وهي تنهار وجهودهنّ المضنية للبدء من الصفر.

صدرت الرواية في طبعتين عن دار الفنك بالدار البيضاء. 

Embark on a journey with Iman and Khaled, a Moroccan couple seeking a better life in Istanbul amidst the tumult of their faltering relationship. Their arrival in this vibrant city intertwines their fate with that of others from diverse Arab nations, each drawn to Istanbul by fate's hand, seeking refuge or escape from their own realities.

تحكي حلم تركي قصة زوج مغربي (إيمان وخالد) ينتقلان إلى إسطنبول لتحسين ظروف حياتهما، في وقتٍ تتدهور فيه علاقتهما الزوجية والعاطفية. بمجرّد ما يحطّان الرحال في إسطنبول، يلتقيان أشخاصاً من جنسياتٍ عربية مختلفة، قادتهم الأقدار إلى هذه المدينة الكبيرة بحثاً عن الاستقرار أو هرباً من واقع مؤلم في بلدانهم. تتطوّر الأحداث وتتشابك لتسلّط الضوء على "الحلم التركي" الذي يعيشه كثيرون والذي أصبح ينافس الحلمين الأمريكي والأوروبي.

من خلال حديث زوجها عن حبيبته السابقة؛ نجوى، اكتشفت شهرزاد صفات إيجابية كثيرة لنجوى تلك، إضافة إلى جمالها الفاتن، فانطلقت في رحلة متعبة ومعقدة لتتعرف إليها، حتى يُخيل للقارئ أنها أحبتها حباً عاطفياً. ..

صدرت الرواية في مايو 2024 عن منشورات المتوسط ـ إيطاليا.

Karima’s characters are sharply drawn, very real and immediate; you can see them, hear them, as if you’re in the room with them, whether it be a wedding or funeral in El Hoceima, a demonstration in Rabat, an apartment in Istanbul, or wherever the events are set. To convey these vivid personalities in English with the same immediacy is both fun and a challenge for the translator...

Moroccan author Karima Ahdad was the winner of this year’s Arabic Flash Fiction contest run by ArabLit and Komet Kashakeel, which saw more than 900 entries from around the world. We read her award-winning story in Katherine Van de Vate’s translation and discuss patriarchy, story creation, and what it means to write “feminist” work.

تقول إن الكتابة أنقذتها، وتعتبر رواياتها بمثابة “بناتها” اللواتي يحلقن عاليا ويسافرن في هذا العالم الكبير، ليصلن لقرائها من مختلف أنحاء العالم ويلمسن قلوبهم.

هي كريمة أحداد، ابنة مدينة الحسيمة، التي استطاعت أن تصنع لها اسما في عالم الكتابة عبر أعمال استطاعت من خلالها حصد العديد من الجوائز الدولية.

It’s from my grandmother, I think, that I inherited compassion, together with my spirit of rebellion, my love of recollecting the past and my passion for living. Like her I adore tattoos, ankle bracelets and rings, kohl and henna, dancing and wide green spaces...

Many people find occasions such as funerals a chance to celebrate. Some women even look forward to them as an opportunity to justify their existence. After they finish the usual lamentations for the deceased, they storm the kitchen to help cook and serve special dishes to the mourners...
